How do you make makeup look light instead of heavy?

Bunch of people have been hinting at me and I had this guy tell me that you look like a whore if you where makeup heavy and well that just ain't true about me . So I really need some makeup advice. Ihave Merle Norman makeup and I have been told that their colors can be too dark for someone 16 or young looking already. So please help a girl out?How do you make makeup look light instead of heavy?
Just wear less makeup, or lighter colors. [:

You could also just wear some mascara, lipgloss and light eyeshadow.

If you have freckles or skin with very few blemishes, use a tinted sunscreen-- it looks good and protects your skin.

Natural is always beautiful, so for a basic day, tinted sunscreen (or whichever tyoe of foundation you require), a little bit of bronzer (only if you're tan, to add life) over cheekbones, mascara, and clear lipgloss. That's really all you need to be beautiful!
Here's what i do:

-if you use foundation: mix 1/2 foundation with 1/2 moisturizer

-i had the same problem you have (for me with eyeliner): i use a shade called Brown Sugar from clinique... Its PERFECT

-no eyeliner? black mascara will highlight eyes. using mascara? dark brown will work wonders!

-Curl your lashes: then you wont need to use as much mascara for an impact

-simple, light, and shimmery bronzer to define your cheekbones and jaw

-clear lipgloss

hope i helped :]
Use natural looking colors, only use them to enhance your good features, and hide flaws. For big days, you can go a little more bold, but dont do that often.

Also, if you dont need the coverage use tinted moisturizer, or, you can just mix a little foundation and moisturizer in your palm.

Mineral makeup is also good, just expensive. Oh, and always use an SPF moisturizer!
keep it natural, use light colors and don't put TOO much makeup
Maybe you are pretty enough without makeup, but I have a good solution for you. Always be very light-handed, never wear too dark eyeliner inside your lower lashes or too thick on top. Don't be shy with mascara though. If you have finished applying all your makeup, (foundation, concealer, powder, eyeshaddow, highlighter on the brow bone, defined your brows and eyes with your eyeliner, blush) all in that order, THEN apply a light layer of face powder (the colour of your skin exactly) over all that, then apply your mascara and lipstick and/or lip gloss last. Note: your foundation and your face powder MUST match your skin colour exactly. The layer of powder on top wil keep your make-up in place all day/ night and it will tone down too much makeup. Just trust me.
Avoid any heavy applications (no piling on the mascara, or foundations). For casual day colors, for eyes, use a brown mascara if you have light skin and or light lashes, use black to intensify your eye features.

Eye shadows should be subtle in color, leave the bright colors (such as ocean blue) and heavy Smokey eyes for evening wear or special occasions.

Light tinted lip glosses are best for brining out your natural lip color, or if you want something more noticeable, warm colors such as honey, are great for keeping it simple.

Hillary Duff has always a clean youthful makeup style, i would suggest checking out some of her pictures and trying to copy that style (based around your skin color ofcourse). Here are some images of her face.

(just glamorous)

Ps. it's also about what you feel comfortable wearing no matter what anyone says, that guy came across rude and in an insulting manner, there will always be people who will think negatively about ones individual style, even if they might be nice to you. Remember makeup is a very fun thing to do and experiment with, and in many cases, you'll go about experimenting in a trial and error type of manner, but that's the best way to learn.

Just wanted to add that 'mickey', has some awesome tips in her answer!
Using a damp makeup sponge to apply your foundation is a good way to get sheer, even coverage.
Try not to put your make up on too thick. I always 'blot' the excess off with make-up pads to ensure I don't end up looking caked in it! The best make-up is that which looks completely natural. Practice putting your make-up on

xx
try not to put on as much of eyshadow...natural tones are good...you can be flirty with some eye liner mascara peachy blush and some pink lipgloss!..oh and try not to put a lot of foundation on..that thicks up the look
Well, first off, try not to use foundation but if you just Can Not live without it, make sure not to but it on your cheeks or beside your nose because you can always tell when its there. Whenever you wear makeup, its suppoesed to look like your not wearing any... so heres what you can do...

Eyes - Put eyeliner on your top lid Only and dont put it right to the inner corners, only as far as your eyelashes go (well, the thick part) (this makes them look big And makes it look like your eyes naturally stand out). Then, (this is optional) take a white eyeliner pencil and put it on the the inner corners (this makes your eyes look big and bright). I suggest not wearing any eyeshadow but thats just because its really complicated to get the right colors and use the right shades in the ride places. It can look good but very few people Really know how to do it.

Eyelashes - Curl your eyelashes and then put two coats of mascara on the top (again, it makes the illusion of bigger and brighter eyes). If you have a lash comb, use that to get rid of clumps. Also, if you want, you can put one coat on the bottom lashes but it doesnt really matter.

Cheeks - i personally think that its easy to tell when someone is wearing blush but if you feel too pale without it, use a kind thats the same tone as your skin's undertones (if your pale, its probably pale pink, if your beige, its probably a purplish brown and if your dark its most likely a bronze.)

Lips - Lips are the easiest because its pretty obvious what looks natural and what doesnt. Also, it usually doesnt matter if it looks unnatural because then it just looks fun (unless your old and are wearing burgundy or bright red lipstick, then thats just gross). You can really do whatever you want here... i like to use fuchsia lipstick because its just so pretty and bright and... Pop! ahah... but you can just use chapstick or lipstain or whatever you like. (and if you like the ';plump'; look... Heres some tips...

-When your brushing your teeth brush your lips too

-Use a minty chatstick [im a fan of ';burt's bees';]

-Put your towel in the dryer and when you get out of the shower, rub your lips with it [bonus, the warm towel feels Reallly good ;P])

Anyway, so i hope i helped.... Good luck :D %26lt;3
put less on and dont use bright colors
